Flip Flop

In the past few years, some brides have hit on the idea of wearing flip-flops with their wedding gowns. They see it as the perfect blend of comfort and cute.

Me, I think it's utter crap.

No, I'm not being harsh. I mean, really. Why spend oodles on a gown and pair it with $1.99 plastic sandals? Cute? I guess, if you like that slap-slap sound when you're going down the aisle. Comfort? Because you can't handle five hours in high heels? Believe me, I know from Shoe Issues, and I know you can find nice ones that don't pinch.

It just...ooh...erg...like sciatica in my Miss Manners nerve.

Then today on The Knot, I see this:

"we're getting married outside in mid-July and my FI is considering having all the men wear flip flops with their gray tuxes. the problem is, he can't figure out how this will look. i'm trying to find some pictures of this to show him. obviously, the tuxes don't have to be gray, but if you have a pic with the guys wearing tuxes and flip flops (or sandals), please let me know..."

*sigh*

Tuxedos...and flip-flops. You know, James Bond and Jimmy Buffett both have individual styles. It doesn't mean they should share a wardrobe.

So wrong. So very very wrong.

Epilogue: The bride later posted that she thought this was a great idea, because her bridesmaids are already wearing flip-flops. Then someone offered to send Bride a picture of her brother, because he wore Adidas sandals with his tuxedo. At which point, my head exploded.

I think I was better off not knowing about this wedding website. :)
At least they're not setting up a website asking strangers to help pay for the aforementioned flip-flops.

See how easy you got off with Lisa's wedding? :) And she didn't even use the "But it's Vegas!" excuse to try to sneak in something tacky. Instead, it was lovely and dignified.

Ew. A friend of mine - lovely girl, she was really adorable - had a wonderful confection of a dress and she wore HIKING BOOTS under it.

HIKING. BOOTS.

And I was thinking, "You're getting married, in the perfect fairy tale princess wedding. All of your guests are wearing high heels. Can't you?"

It was really obvious when she knelt for the vows, too. I was just horrified. But flip flops would be so much worse, how ticky-tacky.

It's like a disease or something... some trend-setter somewhere says flip-flops are the 'in' thing and all the little brides end up wearing them. (I think Sarah Michelle Gellar started it.)

I've played piano for ten, TEN weddings this spring so far and every single bride, in addition to having the requisite David's Bridal strapless gown and french manicure, was flip-flopping down the aisle. I could just cringe!
